Introduction to the Oi Ocha Product Line-Up

The Oi Ocha brand was launched by ITO EN in 1989, following the success of its "Canned Sencha" brand that debuted in 1985. The brand is derived from the Japanese phrase, "Oi, ocha!" brand which is a way of calling out, "It's tea time!" or "Tea, please!"-- part of the warm, everyday conversations heard in Japanese homes. The Oi Ocha beverage brand is now one of the most familiar brands in the Japanese beverage market. (No. 1 brand among green tea beverage products, second-highest sales among all beverage brands.)
The Oi Ocha brand is also used in the marketing of tea leaf products. ITO EN's roots as a specialist tea company may also be seen in its position today as Japan's largest tea company, handling over 20% of all the green tea grown in Japan, and the Oi Ocha brand is also ITO EN's main brand for tea leaf products.

Oi Ocha—Ryokucha

Oi Ocha—Ryokucha is ITO EN's standard green tea product. It is sold throughout Japan in convenience stores, supermarkets, vending machines, station kiosks and other channels, and holds the position as Japan's No. 1 green tea beverage brand. The tea leaves used to make Oi OchaRyokucha include those grown by contracted tea plantations. It is manufactured using ITO EN's proprietary methods, resulting in a fresh flavor and aroma. The product has gained strong acceptance among Japanese consumers and is now making inroads into overseas markets. Oi Ocha—Ryokucha sold in Japan is a completely natural tea product made from 100% Japanese-grown green tea, with no additives or preservatives. It is marketed in a wide array of package sizes and types, including 2 liter PET bottles, 500ml PET bottles, cans and cartons. ITO EN developed the world's first ready-to-drink canned green tea beverage product and later pioneered the marketing of green tea in PET bottles. ITO EN was also early in developing green tea products sold in heatable PET bottles. These efforts have seen ITO EN become a major catalyst in the increasing popularity of green tea ready-to-drink beverages in Japan.

Oi Ocha—Koicha

This is the strong-tasting variation of the Oi Ocha—Ryokucha product. It achieves an excellent balance between astringency and full-bodied flavor as well as a superb green tea fragrance. Oi Ocha—Koicha is made using tea leaves from selected plantations chosen for their particularly fine flavor and aroma.

Oi Ocha—Hojicha

Hojicha is a mild variation of green tea with lowered caffeine and catechins content thanks to the roasting process and has a distinctive brownish color. Oi Ocha—Hojicha is produced by lightly roasting ichibancha (first blush) green tea leaves to give a particularly rich aroma and flavor. The "freshly roast" fragrance is Oi Ocha—Hojicha's defining feature. Direct roasting of the tea leaves at high temperature for a short time is the secret behind its superior aroma.

Oi Ocha—Genmaicha

Genmaicha is a traditional variation of green tea that is known for its mild flavor and because it is an ideal tea following a meal that includes oily foods, such as tempura. The name genmaicha is derived from the Japanese word for brown rice, which is a whole-grain form of rice with the bran still in place around the rice grains. Oi Ocha—Genmaicha uses 100% Japanese rice along with green tea leaves, with the rice being hot-air roasted over an extended period to give a mild and refreshing brown-rice flavor and fragrance.

Oi Ocha—Heatable PET Bottle

ITO EN overcame many difficult technical hurdles to develop a special high-performance heatable PET bottle for green tea in 2000. The heatable PET bottles are sold from heated display cases in stores as well as from vending machines, which hold the tea at a specific temperature range.
